Cakey Makeup, No More! On The DL Tips to get perfect flawless makeup coverage.

Regardless if you have oil rich skin, dry skin, combination skin... Cakey Makeup knows no boundaries.

How to get rid of cakey makeup? Deux Luxe Bride is on a mission to find the culprit. We are officially in stealth mode... possibly taking it to Ninja status.

The scenario: you follow a proper routine for skin care, wash with a cleanser suited to your skin, rinse with cool water to minimize pores and combat redness, tone, then moisturize. But when you go to apply your primer and foundation, everything goes awry.

You're clever enough to start with primer to keep your makeup in place. Then as you swipe on your foundation, you notice the primer streaks and foundation begins to dry and cake!

STOP. Here's how to get rid of cakey makeup.

Rinse with cool water
Let's go back a few steps and dissect the problem.
1) Your cleanser, must be suited to your skin. Oil rich skin cleansers are usually gel or foam and lather on application. Dry skin cleansers are often milky or creamy and essentially do not lather. Combination skin will be an in-between and have a creamy texture yet still lathers slightly. If you are using cleansers that do not treat your specific skin condition, you will end up with skin that is too dry, or skin that is too slick. Neither are ideal conditions for makeup application.

2) Your toner should also be suited to your skin. 'Really?' you ask, 'Really' we reply. A fantastic line for toners are made by Aveda. They have 2 toning mists specifically targeting oil rich and dry skin. Combination skin users should try the latter. They are called... 'Toning Mist' and 'Skin Firming Toning Agent'. Both come in a convenient spray format and make application super easy. Another plus, they are fantastic for setting makeup. We also love that the Toning Mist helps as a mid-day oil absorber and the Skin Firming Toning Agent makes for touch-free moisturizing!

Foundations last from 8 months - 1 year
3) Check your moisturizers, primer, and foundations for expiry dates. Cosmetic shelf-lives differ from product to product as well as from synthetic to natural.
Moisturizer: 3 months to 1 year
Oil-free foundation: 1 year
Concealer: 12-18 months
Products with SPF: 1 season
Primers: 8-12 months
Natural or Organic products are trickier because they eliminate synthetic preservatives from the ingredients which cut shelf-life almost in half! Rule of thumb, for above products subtract 1/3 of the time.

Products that have expired will not blend with other products readily. This is the most common culprit for cakey makeup. Throw out any expired or suspected-expired makeup and you will see an instant difference!

As an added tip to flawless application, ensure that your moisturizer has absorbed before continuing with primer and foundation. Matte finishes can be achieved with a makeup sponge followed by a soft sweep of translucent powder. For a light dewey look, skip primer and mix moisturizer and foundation to apply with fingers as a tint and no powder.
